But how can you be sure you have bought or are going to buy a beautiful diamond? Most people have probably heard of the 4 Cs when it comes to diamonds. The 4 Cs stand for Cut, Carat, Colour and Clarity. In this blog, you will learn more about the 4 Cs.
The cut of the diamond is an important aspect when we talk about diamonds. If the cut is not good, there is no 'fire' in the stone. And that is precisely what makes a diamond the most sought-after gemstone. By 'fire', we mean the brilliance of the diamond. There are different cuts:
Excellent cut; that is, a sparkle is free of spots. All the light entering the diamond is fully reflected.
Very good; very good brilliance with no or hardly any visible external blemishes.
Good; good brilliance with some external blemishes.
Fair; slightly reduced brilliance, some major external blemishes.
This refers to the weight of the diamond. A 1-carat diamond weighs 0.2 grams. 1 carat consists of 100 points. A diamond of 50 points is called half a carat and is referred to as 0.50 crt. The size of the diamond is not directly related to its weight. If a diamond is not properly cut, it may be larger or smaller. On our website, we therefore always display an average size.
When determining the colour of a diamond, we look for diamonds with as little colour as possible. This means a white (transparent) diamond. White diamonds are very rare. 90% of the diamonds found are yellowish in colour. So the whiter the diamond, the higher the value. The colour of the diamond is indicated in letters; D is the most beautiful and Z is the least beautiful. On our website, we offer standard diamonds with colour G and colour E. Colour E is whiter than colour G. Are you looking for a different colour diamond? Then take a look in our diamond database.
A diamond is a natural product and is formed under extremely high pressure. A diamond with no impurities is therefore very rare and we call it flawless. Clarity is subdivided; from FL-IF-LC (flawless) to P3 (noticeable impurities). On our website, we offer standard diamonds with clarity SI and VS in our jewellery.
FL/IF/LC Flawless / Internally Flawless
Not a single blemish is visible with the magnifying glass. These diamonds are very rare and not always available.
VVS1 and VVS2 Very very small internal characteristics
The bumps are very difficult to difficult to find with the magnifying glass.
VS1 and VS2 Very small internal characteristics
The bumps are fairly easy to find with the magnifying glass.
SI1 and SI2 Small internal characteristics
The bumps are easy to very easy to find with the magnifying glass.
P1 Pique 1
The bumps are difficult to find with the naked eye due to the top of the diamond.
P2 Pique 2
The bumps are easy to find with the naked eye and have little effect on the brilliance of the diamond.
P3 Pique 3
The blemishes are very easy to find with the naked eye and affect the brilliance of the diamond.
